A Heart for Students

Raised in Central Indiana, Angie Brecheisen is a personable, effective, and reliable office manager, student ministry leader, and teacher. She's also a proud graduate of Carmel High School (2001) and Indiana Wesleyan University (2005 BA, 2008 MSM) with a God-given heart for students.

From her role as a Marketing Support Coordinator, to serving students and faculty as Evening Manager at the IWU Indianapolis North Education Center for 6 years, Angie's career in higher education has offered her many valuable insights and experiences to reach into the lives of students. In her current position as Regional Office Associate, Angie contributes in multiple facets of operations, conferencing, and key support for all IWU Indianapolis Regional offices -- as well as the Regional Dean.

Angie also joined Grace College as an adjunct faculty member in Fall of 2016 and is nearing a decade teaching and mentoring middle school students at Genesis Church. (She'd be the first to tell you she has truly enjoyed responding to The Lord's calling as a volunteer student ministry leader!)

She is passionate about using her administrative, leadership, organizational, and teaching skills in her career, as well as her ministry to students. And she always enjoys the chance to share her story!

Student ministry in the age of a global pandemic has truly tested the innovation and intentionality of even the most seasoned youth leader. We're tasked with continuing our ministry virtually, but how do we keep some semblance of normalcy or routine many students depend on while acknowledging very little about this time is "normal"? What do you do when students are over-saturated with virtual interaction and it can feel like their digital world is being "invaded"? Are we prepared to accept teenagers actually are looking to be known and pursued outside of their social media profiles?

These are just a few of the tough questions we're asking ourselves while we're also realizing our formats for ministry have a short shelf-life in the virtual world. What works for 4-6 weeks isn't quite as effective once you've reached 8 weeks of the same format. Virtual small groups can start to feel dangerously close to any other online class they're already spending hours in each week, so we're scrambling to reinvent ourselves at a hectic pace in order to stay connected.

But serving in a relationship-oriented ministry during this time has proven it's value when in-person programming hasn't been an option. Encouraging leaders to keep up intentionality, even when it feels futile, will be what makes a difference in student's lives. Their need for connection, to wrestle with their struggles, or to have a listening ear is as great now as it was at the beginning of the year. This pandemic might actually turn out to be a youth leader's ally in the battle for authentic connection with Gen-Z.

Organizations like CIY, Never The Same, and so many others need support more now than ever before. As a non-profit, having to cancel their summer programming is a devastating blow to these ministries ability to bring in revenue and partner with local churches. If you or your church is able to partner with them, please consider doing so!

As a youth ministry leader, I've interfaced with some wonderful organizations that are tremendous resources for volunteer leaders and students. Christ In Youth (CIY), NeverTheSame (NTS), and Youth Specialties (YS) are three groups with very solid credibility and outstanding reputation for their conferences, camps, and curriculums.

Each of these organizations tailors their events and resources for students in very relevant and impactful ways. They strengthen and equip leaders, as well. With CIY, I have participated in their main middle school conference BELIEVE on several occasions. It's a 24-hour, high-energy conference that is a marquee event of Genesis Student Ministry. GSM also participates in CIY: MiX, which is their week-long middle school camp offering. Both events are extremely well-run and a favorite of 6th-8th graders.

NTS has provided wonderful opportunities to get a closer look at operations of their NTS Camp, network with their staff, and share student ministry trends and insight with President and Founder, Jeff Eckart.  A vital component of NTS camps and the entire organization is prayer. Claim Your Campus (CYC) prayer ministry movement and Soul Exercise bible study tools NTS has developed and are available as apps for all students and ministry leaders.

CYC is embarking on a historic mission for July of 2020. Their desire is to gather 1 million students in Kansas City, MO for a corporate prayer and worship experience that will change a generation! Follow them on social media or check out their website for info. *Due to COVID-19, CYC 2020 was changed to a virtual event.

Each student ministry worker should have the wonderful and refreshing opportunity to participate in leadership training with top-level youth ministry experts at a YS event. Equipping leaders and partnering with parents are crucial elements of youth ministry. YS does this better than anyone.

In November of 2017, I attended my first National Youth Workers' Convention in Memphis, TN. It was outstanding!  To be challenged and poured into by nationally renowned speakers and youth ministry experts was awesome! Their partnership with Download Youth Ministry (DYM) proved instrumental in revitalizing the NYWC and equipping more leaders.

GSM is the weekly Student Ministry Connection Group and gathering of students in 6th - 12th grades at the Genesis Church Carmel Campus. I've had the opportunity to lead small group discussion for middle school girls for nearly 9 years -- and, lead the main weekly lesson for all students.
